Build Season Safety
Before Build Season itself, we encourage safety in a variety of ways. First, we have something called MORT University. What it is, is a couple months prior to build season, we invite our past and incoming members to come attend a teaching and learning seminar about our program and particularly the sub-team that they choose. If a student would like to participate in Build Season, it is a requirement that they attend 80% of MORT U in reference to the work they do with that sub-team. The leads and mentors of that sub-team teach each student every single machine that they are allowed to use. This is our way of ensuring that our students have knowledge of the machines that they will and might use. Although, machines such as the CNC are only allowed to be used by certain experienced and trained students. Students are also only allowed to use machines if a mentor is in the room! This way of extensively training each of our students and inserting general protocols helps ensure that our students stay safe!

During Build Season we have to use the safety protocols we have had and ensure that they are followed. For example, even though we are comforted by the fact that each of our students are highly trained in the machines they are allowed to use, we make sure that there are posted directions in front of each machine. This helps our students remember what to do in the scenario that they forget what to do. Another reference that they may have in terms of directions is our safety manual, our safety manual is available to all members of our team, it includes emergency plans, contacts, how to operate machines, electrical safety, programming safety and more. We also have a variety of safety signs put up around our shop to remind our students to STAY SAFE! In our shop, we have an entire safety area! In this area, we have a sink, eyewash station, multiple safety kits, right to know compliance center, safety data sheets, OSHA regulations station, and 3 fire extinguishers. With this, we have certain students that are first aid certified, EMTS, and CPR certified to help us have all precautions possible.
